Miss Critchlow and Mrs Young are our Year 5 teachers, and they are supported by Miss Roddam. Miss Critchlow teaches Year 5 Birch and Mrs Young teaches Year 5 Lime.

West Lane Run for Fun!

On Friday 25th May almost 400 of us (!) went to Saltwell Park, to participate in the annual ‘Gateshead Schools Fun Run’ event. We arrived by coach and when we got there we enjoyed warming up with the Metro Gnomes!

Year 5 ‘angle’ their way through measurements!

In Maths, Year 5 have been busy looking at different types of angles – using protractors to accurately measure different angles. Mrs Young and Miss Critchlow covered the classroom in masking tape and our task was to label, estimate and measure as many angles we could. We used our knowledge of the fact angles on a straight line add up to 180 degrees to ensure our measurements were accurate – and had great fun in the process!

Year 5 ‘explorers’ explore Sunderland Winter Gardens!

This week, Year Five explored Sunderland Winter Gardens as part of our Explorer topic. We had the opportunity to learn about different kinds of animals which live in the rainforest, and were intrigued to find out lots of new facts about rainforest animals. Father Tom leaves us…

We have been very fortunate to have had such a close relationship with our local church, so this week’s assembly was a particularly sad occasion for our school – as it was Father’s Tom leaving assembly.

West Lane choir ‘Sing Big’ at The Sage!

Last Monday, we had brilliant time at The Sage performing at the ‘Big Spring Sing’. Thank you to all of the wonderful West Lane parents who came to support us at the event and a huge thank you to Mrs Kendrick our fabulous music teacher from Gateshead council, who worked alongside Miss Sergison so that we could reach our full potential as a choir. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did!

Year 5 help Mrs Young with a ‘hot’ problem!

Mrs Young had a problem: her cup of coffee burnt her hand, but then was cold after 5 minutes. To help solve Mrs Young’s ‘serious’ problem, Year 5 worked in groups and planned an experiment to see which material was the best insulator and would keep her coffee the warmest for the longest period of time.

Year 5 take a trip to Whitby!

Wow! What a fantastic trip to Whitby! We had the most incredible 2 days away, and learnt a lot of things (even if we didn’t think we did!) such as: communication; independence; resilience, team work and problem solving. Take a look at our photo slideshow to see how much fun we had!
